My top 5 this year couldn’t be more different from each other; featuring a variety of genres and developers both big and small. #5 is a modern throwback to classic games and like Shovel Knight proves that there is still plenty of life in the 2D genre.
#6 is a game that is just on that bubble for me between the bottom and top 5. While this may be part of a series, this is the first one to achieve colossal success; even more so by beating a AAA competitor in the same genre.
#7 Came out of nowhere to be a great take on the Bullfrog management Sim genre; with it and Prison Architect, proving that there are still plenty of ways to create interesting design with it.
Moving along, we turn to a genre that I was never a fan of, and it would take a pair of ARPG designers and their first game at their new studio to wow me.
