pp time small The Use of Time Mechanics in Game Design

For this cast, I spoke with returning guest John Brieger and speedrunner/designer Vincent to discuss how time can be used as a game mechanic in design. We, of course, talked about Majora’s Mask and the groundhog day design.

From there, we spoke about John and Vincent’s board game they’re designing together: Chrono Corsairs. An update from John is that the game’s release has been pushed back to February 2020.

When we normally talk about aesthetics in videogames, we’re referring to the art and music that helps raise the quality and presentation of the game, but for today I want to talk about something else. As videogames have grown this past decade, I’ve seen a trend from niche genres that developers should be paying attention to with regards to making these games easier to digest.

Instead of coming up with brand new ideas, game developers can call on previous classics to win over gamers. Remastering or re-releasing the best games from a decade gone by is an almost sure way to earn a good reception. Whether it be nostalgia or something else, a little blue hedgehog seeking golden rings or an Italian plumber riding a dinosaur can be a guaranteed victory for developers with the rights.
