Greg Johnson and Bringing Toejam and Earl Back

This week on the podcast, I spoke with Greg Johnson from Humanature Studios who is in the middle of their kickstarter to revive Toejam and Earl and there are only a few days left.

Toejam and Earl

We started talking about Greg’s experience in the industry and how things have changed over the last two decades regarding the industry and being a game designer including having to become more of a public face than back in the day.

After that we talked about the original design of Toejam and Earl and how it was really one of the first rogue-like games to be made and a brief history of the series’ ups and downs. I also talked about the story I mentioned during my kickstarter spotlight which Greg got a kick out of. I also asked Greg about the ownership of the Toejam and Earl IP which brought up an interesting conversation about IP ownership and the difference today and back in the 90s.

We then moved on to the kickstarter itself, including talking about why Greg went to kickstarter now, the amount of physical rewards he has and his thoughts on the model. I found the talk on the physical goods very interesting as a lot of developers in the past talked about problems with having too many goods but Greg talked about the research and planning he did to make sure that everything was taken care of.

Lastly we talked more about the concept of Back in the Groove itself and what Greg has in mind if he gets funded along with the challenges of coming up with a new art style.
