A Timely Discussion on Turn Based Strategy Games

This week I was joined by new guest Iain Compton: designer at eRepublik Labs for a talk about board game and turn based strategy design.

Game-Wisdom

We started off talking about board game design and how the platform has evolved over the years along with how this translates into computer game design. We had an interesting discussion on microtransactions and what his thoughts are on the best ways to implement them.Along with the challenges of bringing turn based strategy games to the mobile market.

Instead of talking about news of the week we discussed kickstarter and crowd funding and what Iain’s thoughts are on the subject. We talked about recent games we’ve been playing and I talked about my frustrating time with Chibi Robo: Photo Finder.

Finally we had a great talk about the turn based strategy genre. From designing systems, UI and a discussion about tutorial design. Personally I find tutorial design to be a very underrated topic that designers should pay more attention to and our talk on the subject should be a must hear for strategy game designers. Fair warning, on the day of recording my throat was feeling scratchy and it kind of made me slur my speech a bit.
