If there’s one thing you can say about Ace Team is that you never know what you’re going to get from them. The original Rock of Ages was a tower defense/Marble Madness game ran through a Monty Python filter. With the sequel, Ace Team has gotten the winning (and weird) formula down.
Abyss Odyssey is the latest game from Ace Team, the makers of the insane Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages. The developers continue their streak of original games with an attempt at combining rogue-lite design with fighting games. The experience is different but there is a certain lack of polish that keeps the game at the moment only skin deep.
When Ace Team released Zeno Clash in 2009, we had one of the rare examples of a first person game that focused on melee combat as opposed to shooting. Backed up with an amazing visual style and story, the game became somewhat of a cult hit. After several years and Ace’s next unusual game Rock of Ages, we finally got a sequel released last year.
While Zeno Clash 2 aimed to make things bigger, the developers kind of missed the one area that was most important: The combat system.
