Helldivers is the latest game from Arrowhead Games and was their first game developed originally for PSN and is now making the move to the PC. While it may feel like their previous hit Magicka at first, there are a lot of new things out there in space.
Logic Artists appeared a few years ago with the successful kickstarter and game Expeditions: Conquistadors which combined multiple genres into a very unique game experience. This time the developers are going in a completely different direction in an attempt to produce a unique co-op experience and from what I’ve played they are definitely getting there.
In horror design these days, the big push would have to be the inclusion of Co-op. Resident 5 and 6, Dead Space 3 and the latest Silent Hill game that was a top down dungeon crawler are leading the charge. I bet designers see themselves as being clever, except there is one little tiny problem with how co-op is currently used: It DOESN’T CREATE HORROR.
When it comes to First Person Shooters, I prefer those of the non military kind, where it’s not so much about chest covered wall and more about monsters and special abilities. The Darkness 1 and 2, based on the comic book of the same name delivered on that front.
While creating a game off of another property is a challenge in of itself. What is more interesting is how two games in the same series, differed so much based on the design philosophies of the two studios that made them.
