Each year there is always one game that I know almost immediately that it’s going to be a top contender for GOTY, and my #1 game this year was figured out after about 30 minutes of my first play.
Our #4 game this year earns the spot as perhaps the least original in terms of design but being an all-around title that sticks the landing and delivers from beginning to end.
We’re officially into the top 5 for my best of 2019 list, and we turn to a game that had such a strong gameplay loop it could have been ranked higher if not for some sad to see issues.
The idle genre has been one of the easiest to design games around, but the hardest in terms of iterating on. Leave it too simple and people get bored, complicate things too far and they’ll get pushed away. For my #7 pick, we have a game that embodies the idle design, but adds to it in great ways.
