The change has been happening for some time, but soon we might see an even more radical shift in how we think of portable gaming. Mobile games for smartphones became the standard for most people years ago, but there has been one holdout that hadn’t yet taken the plunge.

Nintendo, once commanders of the mobile market through the original Game Boy and now the 3DS is finally developing games for mobile devices, and the move comes not a moment too soon.

Bird of Light (4)

Bird of Light by Roach Interactive has had one interesting journey getting here. When I spoke to designer Rahul Sehgal about it, the game was originally pitched as a mobile game. He ran into trouble with finding publishers willing to let him create the game he wanted.

In response, he moved the game over to PC and Steam to finish the game that will now eventually be ported back to mobile at some point. Despite the problems during development, Bird of Light shows a lot of smart design decisions for a very unique game.

Bit.Trip has been an interesting series to watch its growth, going through the evolution of game design and graphics from pong to even the runner genre. Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2:  Future Legends of the Rhythm Alien is the first time that the series has a direct sequel and it features some great mechanics despite the simplistic design.
