For #6 this year, I’m breaking my own rules a bit as I’m not giving one specific game the award but an entire company. But considering the year they had, it’s easy to understand why.
This week, we welcomed back to the cast Chris Park from Arcen Games to catch up about how everything is going at Arcen. For the first half we talked about some topics in the industry: Steam cards, kickstarter and so on. We then moved to Skyward Collapse which recently had its 2.0 version and first expansion released.
This week on the cast, Ken and I welcomed back Chris Park from Arcen Games. For the first part of the cast we talked about Arcen’s new development strategy and the state of Indie and AAA developers. Around the 35 minute mark, we transitioned to talking about Arcen’s latest hit: Skyward Collapse.
From how the game came to be, to what is coming with the first free content patch and paid expansion. This week was also my first time editing the cast and I hopefully caught most of my heavy breathing. Ken may sound a bit louder than normal as he was not using his regular headset.
I’ve talked about Arcen Games several times in the past few months and the one thing that I appreciate from them is their willingness to keep trying new things. For fans of Arcen, the game that put them on the map was the complex strategy game: AI Wars, which Chris Park talked about on his last guest cast here as their most popular title.
With Skyward Collapse, this is Arcen’s return to the strategy genre, however this is anything but your typical strategy game. As Skyward Collapse is an interesting subversive take on the genre.
