What is provably fair anyway?

In the past, we had to just rely on studios and casinos when they said their games were fair. Now, because titles are on the blockchain, their underlying cryptography is accessible in a permanent and transparent way.

Most provably fair games have three different aspects – the server seed, client seed and nonce. These combine together to create the random outcome, like this:

1. The server seed is generated

The casino generates a long and random server seed, which you can’t see immediately (for security reasons). You see it as a hash, which is basically a digital fingerprint that can’t be reversed. 

So the server seed might look like this, a massive string of random numbers: 8ca2fdb0b74c2…

And the displayed hash might look at this… again, totally random: d7bc99e0f35f2d2c6b3e…

What you need to know is that, once the hash has been published, the casino can’t later change it in a secret and dastardly bid to pull the wool over their customers’ eyes, because a totally different hash would be created and flag up the fraud!

2. You pick your client seed

Usually, you can customize your client seed and type your own (or just choose to have one automatically generated). You might want to pick something super-simple like Jack2026 or USDTgamer1 if you like. 

But changing your client seed (known as rotating) doesn’t change your chances of winning, only the sequence of randomly generated future numbers.

A lot of long-term gamers change their client seed every so often before a mega gaming session. 

3. You place your bet

Every bet gets a nonce, or counter, which is numbered in a logical flow – so bet 1 is Nonce 0, bet 2 is Nonce 1, etc. Even if the seeds stay the same, every nonce gives you a new outcome.  This keeps every result different, even if you use the same seed.

4. Check the server seed

When you finish up your gaming session or decide to rotate your server seed, the casino can show you the original server seed. At this point, you’ll have everything you need to check the result.

5. Confirm the hash

So, first, you’ll look at the server seed and the original published hash to check that they match. The good news is, most good online casinos offer their own in-built tool that does the verification for you, so you don’t have to go off and hunt down a third-party software.

6. Now fact-check the game result

Why bother rotating your seeds at all?

Some players never bother rotating their seeds, but if you get into the habit of doing so early on, you’ll be able to use every previous server seed to carry out provably fair verifications. That’s definitely worth doing after a really long session, a mega win or an equally mega loss.
