Persistence changes the meaning of progress
In a session-based game, progress is bounded by the match. Persistent worlds give actions a longer shadow. A building changes the landscape for future players. A resource decision affects tomorrow’s economy. A damaged relationship can matter after everyone logs out.
This continuity creates stories without requiring authored quests. Players assign meaning to places and objects because they remember how those things entered the world. The server becomes a social memory system as much as a technical one.
Rules select the audience
Every server configuration expresses a theory of the game. A high-resource server says that construction matters more than scarcity. A permanent-death server treats survival as the central skill. A roleplay server turns consistency of character into a form of mastery.
