The Story Behind Her Story: An Interview with Sam Barlow

This week on the cast, I had the delight of talking to Sam Barlow, the developer behind the recent hit Her Story for a discussion on it and a variety of other topics.

Her Story

We started off with talking about how Sam got started in the Game Industry and his role on the interesting game Silent Hill Shattered Memories. We talked about what he did on the game and how its design and storytelling would become something that would inspire Sam. That led into a greater talk on horror design and we talked about multiple topics relating to the genre, Shattered Memories and more.

At 46 minutes in, we finally came to talking about Her Story. I did give a spoiler warning here, but I don’t think we went into any specifics about the plot or solutions to the game. We talked about how Sam came up with the concept for the game, the use of the FMV style and more.

At around 01:20:00 in, we came to our final topic and talking about interactive storytelling and visual novels as a whole. I asked Sam the ever popular topic of, what is a game? We also talked about how adventure games have become more about the storytelling and less about the puzzles; with Telltale Games as the big example. This was an all around amazing cast and I definitely want to have Sam back on again for more topics, especially talking about the horror genre some more.
