Game-Wisdom’s Best of 2021 #10

For my #10 game of 2021, I’m breaking my own rules with a game that was released in 2020, but has received more than enough content to deliver almost a second game this year, and that is Prodigal by Colorgrave Games.

Prodigal Main

#10 Prodigal

Prodigal is an example of a game that knows what it wants to be. Speaking with the developers on an interview, that came after a complete streamlining of the gameplay and content that was originally played. A game that emulates the action/adventure design of the old school gameboy ZeldasProdigal goes beyond that in several areas. This is a far more puzzle-focused game compared to the Zeldas. Despite only having three active items, the developers make great use out of them, along with speedrunners finding additional uses.

Tess here has one of my favorite story arcs

The game’s story is subtle, and a lot of the hidden meanings may go over people’s heads, but there is a great story here in terms of redemption and proving one’s self. The different characters are fleshed out, and you’ll learn more about them if you go for their romance options.

What earns it a spot on this list is the amount of work that has gone into the game post-launch. The game’s new game+ options that changed the difficulty and turned a casual adventure into a challenging ordeal was great. New dungeons, stories, and an entirely new act that delivers the final ending of the game have expanded things. With that work done, it’s almost like a sequel in terms of content added to the base game.

What stops it from going higher is the simple fact that the game is still a title released in 2020, and it wouldn’t be fair to the other games. This is definitely a title that I know a lot of people slept on, and with it officially being content finished, should be a must-play for any fans of 2D action/adventure.
