The Hidden States Inside Modern Slots


Press spin, the reels move, and symbols land. Game over, right?

Well, not quite… 

Modern slots are weird little bits of game design because the thing you actually do has stayed absurdly simple, while everything underneath has become increasingly busy. One tiny input now kicks off cascades, respins, feature rounds, multipliers, jackpots, all without asking the player to leave the screen. 

This is what makes the humble online spinner much closer to complex, systems-based games than they first appear. It’s easy to assume that complexity in gaming equals elaborate interfaces and interactions, but, if anything, the opposite is actually true. Really smart design works the other way around: keep the input legible and let the system underneath do the heavy lifting. 

Think about Vampire Survivors. You know how to play it in a matter of seconds, but the interactions between upgrades, weapons, and enemy waves all become increasingly elaborate. Hades does something similar with its build combinations… but a digital slot? It takes this principle to a new level. 

And that’s exactly why I think it’s time to shine a light on just how sophisticated the hidden state machines powering digital casino spinners have become. 

One Button Doesn’t Mean O

ne System

Starting from a pure design perspective, it’s fascinating to track the many ways a modern slot evolves from the moment you launch the load screen. Playing online slots for real money, like Golden Buffalo or Zeus Multiways, isn’t just about selecting a stake and pressing “spin”… Quite frankly, that opening spin really is only the starting state. 

 

The game might then go on to drop key symbols to trigger a respin, or launch cascading reels that actually prevent the round from ending for several minutes. This isn’t about one repeated action, but a whole series of possible states branching out from it. We might never see that architecture, but it’s certainly felt when the game shifts from one state into another. 

The Base Game Is State One

So, let’s look a bit deeper into states in slots games. Most of these begin in what you can think of as the base state: regular reel configurations, symbols behaving as expected, and whatever paylines, clusters, or ways-to-win systems the game uses are operating in their default form.

Then, a specific symbol lands in just the right position and suddenly, the game stops behaving in the same way. Why? Because the next state has been triggered. And triggers have been used by game designers for, oh, about forever. 

 

Walk into an arena in Dark Souls, and the doors lock. Get that final Elden Ring boss down to half health, and it suddenly grows wings. You play video games, you get the idea! We experience all of these shifts as in-game events or occurrences, but underneath, they’re the game moving into a brand-new state. 

From Base Game to Bonus States

This is especially easy to see in Hold & Win formats. In this mechanic, qualifying symbols landing in a reel will trigger a separate sequence where some symbols lock in place, and a limited number of respins begins. The usual base state game is pretty much put on hold. 

 

What does this mean? It’s now in temporary game mode, not too dissimilar from an arcade game suddenly dropping you into an unexpected bonus stage. You’re playing inside the same ecosystem, yes, but you’re not really playing by the same rules—for a short while, at least. 

 

Cascading reels represent another hidden state within a game. Why? Because they interrupt that very established rhythm of input, result, rest. 

 

If you’re thinking this is all very stop-start, you wouldn’t be wrong. Traditional reel systems are based on almost reassuringly monotonous pacing. But a reel that cascades (i.e. qualifying symbols disappear as new ones fall into place) stretches the result phase, allowing an outcome to feed directly into the next, and the next, and the next.

 

There are even states in which the whole familiar structure of the reel gets reshaped, such as dynamic-reel mechanics that switch up how many symbols appear in each reel in a Megaways format.

 

Again, this isn’t some alien concept unique only to the casino space. Roguelikes rebuild rooms all the time!  

Complexity Only Works If It’s Engaging

I’m going to make a pretty wild statement here, which is that I reckon video game developers could learn a valuable lesson or two from the online casino! Adding more and more complexity to a game is easy, but making these systems engaging is not. 

Modern slots, even those with multiple hidden states, aren’t complicated to play. Why? 

Because software providers generally tend to build underneath and around the simplicity of the original format. They’ve figured out just how much can unfold from that simple interaction of pressing spin and draw the line at anything that detracts from the overall experience of spinning the reels. That’s a winning formula, right there.
