Our #7 game is the first game from an indie company, and offered one of the most innovative shooters seen in a long time.
#7 Superhot
Superhot is one of those ideas that when you think about it, you wonder why no one else has done this before. The game could best be described as a first person shooter/puzzle. Time is nearly stopped when you’re not moving, and only unfreezes as you move around.
The challenge of the game is figuring out how to use this ability to survive giant firefights and do your best bullet-time impression. As the game goes on, you’ll be put into increasingly challenging fights and situations. The visual style of the game may look simple, but it ties everything together really well.
The story is odd, and yet feels perfect for the game. While the main content is on the short side, the game boasts a number of additional challenges and optional content.
What stops this from ranking higher on my list is that I would have liked to have seen more ways of playing the game. Because of how must the slow down mechanic impacts the game, it makes a lot of the challenges all blur together due to how dominate it is. You do get a power later on, but I would have loved to have seen different challenges.
With that said, Superhot is a very impressive game; all the more that this is from a first time studio. It’s very rare to see this kind of polish and imaginative design coupled so well as a first game. I hope that the game has done well for them, as I really want to see what’s next from the Superhot team.
Coming up next for #6, the first AAA game that makes the best of list this year.
